Today we will discuss about high cholesterol known as hypercholesterolemia. As urbanization is in full swing every part of the world, it has brought enormous change to the life style. People are consuming a lot of trans fats, fast food along with alcohol and smoking.
There is rising trend of coronary artery disease, heart attacks, stroke attributable to hypercholesterolemia.
It is a metabolic syndrome strongly associated with obesity, diabetes and Coronary artery disease. Normal cholesterol levels are between 125 to 200mg/dl. Any value persistently above 200mg/dl are associated with symptoms of hypercholesterolemia.
Among women there is a association between 3Fs i.e, Female, Fatty and above Forty. Cholesterol are basically two types I.e, Good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. HDL is good cholesterol and LDL, VLDL,TG are bad cholesterol. Any value of HDL above 40mg/dl is good and LDL level above 100mg/dl is bad.
Is there any association between breastfeeding or formula feeding with hypercholesterolemia in future ?
Yes..those babies who are breast fed have lower risk of developing hypercholesterolemia than those fed with formula.
Risk factors for hypercholesterolemia..

4. Fatty foods like cheese, butter, pizza’s, meat, oils like coconut oil, palm oil
5. Alcohol
6. Refined sugars and low fiber diet
7. Family history

-High fiber diet like fruits, vegetables, fish oil,cooking oils like sunflower, safflower oil
– Regular exercise
– controlling diabetes
– Avoiding alcohol ,smoking
High cholesterol in blood vessels form plaques which narrow the blood vessels leading to myocardial infarction or heart attacks, stroke. The incidence are rising nowadays. People above 40 years particularly should be more aware of this problem and should have regular health check up.

How can we know that I have high cholesterol ? Is it necessary to examine lipid profile at least once in a year after 50 in a routine manner ?
Yes we should check at least yearly..surprisingly not only in urban but also in rural areas the incidence is rising.Initially no symptoms ..but silently it proceeds with metabolic disorders..after 40 ,yearly check is advised .
