Zinc- An essential super micronutrient

Share this post on:

A micronutrient is an essential element needed by our body in very minute quantities which is equally essential to our body as macronutrients.

Zinc is one of the very important micronutrient aids in very vital functions of our body. It’s deficiency causes growth retardation, immune dysfunction, gonadal dysfunction, dermatitis, diarrhea, poor wound healing.

In the developing  world where diarrhea is much prevalent, pediatrics patients benefit from zinc supplementation. It reduces the morbidity and mortality from diarrhea. Children older than 6 months are usually given 20mg per day for 10 to 14 days during the acute episodes of diarrhea.

Recent studies show its role in pneumonia. It may reduce the severity of pneumonia also. Practically speaking zinc is a super micronutrient involved in growth and immunity. The developing world should focus on zinc deficiency actively and the policy makers  should be concerned about the zinc deficiency and its essential  remedies.

The intention of this blog  is to spread the knowledge of essential role of micronutrient about which we are little  less concerned.

Thank you
