Hiccup is a very common problem might have been experienced by most of us at some point of time. It is due to contraction of diaphragmatic muscle that separates abdomen from thorax. Simply it is the barrier between chest and abdomen. Its contraction produces the characteristic hic sound due to partial closure of glottis.
Now the question is whether it is normal or abnormal. Because the cause may vary from person to person. In our day to day life even after loaded meal in stomach can lead to embarrassing hiccups. It usually vanishes after some hours.
But in chronic patients diabetes it may warrant proper evaluation. Refractory hiccups in such patients may underlie the problems of uremia or diabetic nephropathy. Reports regarding serum urea or creatinine may solve the problem. Usually control of blood sugar may dissipate the embarrassing hiccups. It may be seen in some neurological problems like stroke, meningitis.
Remedies must address the underlying problem before starting a drug therapy. Some medications like diaphragmatic relaxants, proton pumps inhibitors may help in this type of problems. Consulting the physician to properly evaluate the chronic patients mandate in the management of impending complications.
