How to Manage Recurrent worrisome Gastric Problems?

Recurrent gastritis, often classified as chronic gastritis, is a long term condition where persistent gastric symptoms recur, with complications.

Common triggers for Recurrent Gastritis

Diet-related

  • Skipping meals or eating late at night

  • Spicy, oily, fried or deep fried foods

  • Excess tea or coffee especially on empty stomach

  • Carbonated drinks

  • Large heavy meals

Lifestyle-related

  • Stress

  • Poor sleep pattern
  • Smoking or tobacco use

Medical causes

  • Acid reflux (GERD)

  • Gastritis

  • H. pylori infection

Other causes

  •  Use of NSAIDs: Frequent use of pain killers like aceclofenac, ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen can inhibit substances that protect the stomach lining.
  • Excessive Alcohol and Smoking: These are  major irritants that can directly damage the lining and increase acid production.
  • Autoimmune Gastritis: In this condition, our body’s immune system  attacks its own stomach cells, often leading to gastritis.

How to manage the case of Recurrent Gastric Problems?

Eating habits

  • Eat small but frequent meals

  • Finish dinner at least 2–3 hours before sleep

  • Avoid lying down immediately after taking meals

Foods that usually help

  • Plain rice, dal or  curd

  • Oats, bananas, apples

  • Boiled vegetables

  • Warm water

Foods to limit or avoid

  • Very spicy, fried or processed food

  • Raw onions or garlic

  • Sweets and bakery items

  • Cold drinks

Stress & Mind–Gut Connection 

The stomach is highly sensitive to stress

  • Practice deep breathing

  • Regular yoga

  • Regular sleep cycle

Tests for recurrent Gastric problems

  • H. pylori test                         1. Urea breath test- Here a liquid containing Urea is given to drink. Then the person is allowed to breathe. CO2 is emitted as urea is broken down by bacteria.      2. Stool antigen test            3. Blood antibody test- But it cannot distinguish between present and past infection.

  • Ultrasound- It detects the ulcers or inflamed parts of stomach. It provides timely warning before any complications.
  • Endoscopy–  It is necessary for moderate to severe symptoms. Helpful in  detecting epithelial integrity, inflammation and ulcers.
