 Breast feeding Importance — 

1. Breast feeding is a very essential practice for a new born baby for survival. It is started within one hour after birth.

2. It is rich in all types of nutrients in proper composition for the growth of baby. Carbohydrates, protein , fats, vitamins, minerals, water, antibodies, special factors for combating micro-organism are present in adequate amount for nourishment of the baby.

3. Breastfeeding creates bonding between mother and baby.

4. Breastfed babies have lesser risk of developing diabetes, obesity in later stage in adulthood.

According to WHO, exclusive breastfeeding should be continued for at least six months. After six months, complimentary feeding should be started and it should be continued till two years of life or more.

World breast feeding week is celebrated every year between August 1-7.

WABA( World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action) — It is a worldwide task force group created between individuals and organisations dedicated for protection, promotion  and support of breastfeeding practices. The main role of such a network is to promote breast feeding.

Warm chain campaign for Breast feeding– The core objective of this strategy is the bond between mother and baby involving different actors in health, society , workplace to provide a continuum of care in the first 1000 days of birth. It helps to identify the role of individuals and subsequent linking of the worm chain. 

WHO UNICEF  Guidelines for Infant Young Child Feeding (IYCF) Practices–

1. Early initiation of breast feeding in a hour after birth.

2. Exclusive breastfeeding till 6 months of age.

3. Continuation of breastfeeding till 2 years of life or more with initiation of  complimentary feeding from six months of age.
