A ten year old boy attended our clinic with complaints of high grade fever , burning micturition, lower abdominal pain since last 7 days. On systemic examination everything was normal.
Fever was high grade along with chill. On the first instance it may look like malaria. But on routine urine examination pus cells were plenty suggestive of urinary tract infection.
Symptoms were also correlating towards urinary tract infections. Culture was sent and the organism isolated was E.coli. It was a case of significant bacteriuria.
Antibiotics were started and the patient recovered. On history taking, it was found to a recurrent case with two previous episodes of infection.
Urinary infections if not treated properly may present as recurrent infections leading to morbidity and subsequently ascending infections lead to kidney failure.
Things to prevent recurrent urinary infections…
1. Drink plenty of water
2. Cranberry juice can aid in preventing recurrence of urinary infections
3. Vitamin C , lemon juice can be taken
4. Role of probiotics like Lactobacillus in prevention of recurrence of UTI is also studied.
You can refer my article on probiotics..its role in one of my previous article in http://www.drsppradhan.blogspot.com.
5. Urinary tract hygiene
Urinary infections shouldn’t be taken lightly. Recurrence may lead to renal complications and subsequently renal failure.
