Red Urine: Is it always dangerous??

Share this post on:

Red urine is is not synonymous with hematuria. Red urine is the reddish discoloration of urine. While hematuria is RBC  in urine I.e more than 5RBCs per high power field.

Red urine can be both physiological and pathological.

Physiological conditions of red urine..

1. Ingestion of beet roots may cause red urine.

2. Food and candy coloring agents sometimes cause red urine.

3. Taking of some drugs for some other causes can change the colouration of urine like Rifampicin, phenothiazines, nitrofurantoin, Quinine, Sulphasalazine.

So red urine is not always dangerous.  We don’t have to panic always before evaluating the cause. Consult the physician before you reach a diagnosis by yourself.

Do a routine and microscopic urine examination to rule out the pathological conditions. Semi quantitative methods like dipstick can be done at bed side.
